For decades, mental health languished in the background whilst more tangible physical issues like cancer, obesity, heart disease grabbed media and government attention. World Mental Health Day (on Sat) has played a big part in recent years in pushing forward the idea that hidden wellness is just as important, if not more so.
Especially in a year like this, WMHD deserves to be bigger than ever as COVID continues to upend lives, leaving growing numbers feeling exhausted, stressed, anxious, depressed and isolated. WHO grimly predicts that “the need for mental health and psychosocial support will substantially increase in the coming months and years”.
Sadly, floatation therapy isn’t a cure for mental health problems but it can help enormously when it comes to reducing the symptoms. With no external stimulation from light, sound, gravity and touch, the mind has a rare opportunity to decompress and disengage from pain.
Several large studies have shown that floating is effective for anxiety including one in 2016 which found that it reduced symptoms such as depression, sleep difficulties, irritability and fatigue1.
